Join me as we read a chapter of Luke daily, preparing for our celebration of Christ’s birth. When I open God’s Word, I say I am about to experience a feast. As I read a chapter a day through the gospel of Luke, I am not just reading the Word of God; I want to devour it. The word devour means to feast on, to be absorbed by, engulf, overcome, and consume. I cannot casually glance at God’s Word; I must digest and devour God’s Word as part of my life.
Luke 1 –
As I devoured Luke 1, I know the story takes place during the days of King Herod of Judea. The individuals introduced in this chapter are Zechariah, a priest; his wife, Elizabeth, an Angel of the Lord; a virgin named Mary; and Joseph, Mary’s finance.
Mary’s story spoke to me in many ways. While Mary is minding her own business, Gabriel, an angel, shows up and gives her a lot of “heavy” information, telling her she has been chosen to be the one in all of human history to birth the Messiah. Mary responds in 1:38; I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said. What impressed me was that she believed the angel’s words and agreed to bear the child, even under humanly impossible circumstances. She felt God was and is able to do the impossible. I believe Mary gave one of the hardest yes a person has ever given to the living God. This kingdom adventure, Mary said yes, not only changed her life but changed the world.
Lesson for us:
1. Are we willing to say yes to a kingdom adventure from God, not knowing what it will cost us?
2. When God asks us to serve Him, do we willingly obey?
3. God performed one of his greatest miracles through one of his humblest servants. Are we humble enough to be entrusted with a mighty work of God?
