Did you know that Psalm 119 is both the longest psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible? The theme of this psalm is the practical use of the Word of God in the life of the believer. This is one of my favorite psalms because almost every line mentions God’s Word. The opening word of the psalm is blessed, and the following verses tell us how we can receive God’s blessing. First, we must seek God with all our hearts. Seeking God means much more than reading the Bible or even studying the Bible. It means hearing God’s voice in His word, loving Him more, and wanting to delight His heart and please Him. Seeking God means wholehearted surrender to Him.
Psalm 119 contains 176 verses and as you read it, I encourage you to read it in sections and meditate on the words. Read through verses 1-32 and underline any phrases or words that stand out to you. Then read verses 33-72 and pick out one verse that especially impacts you. Write it out on a sticky note and put it in a place you will see it every day. Next, read verses 73-96 and write out one big idea that you take away from it. In verses 97-120 make a list of the benefits of loving God’s Word and keeping His commands. In verses, 121-144 does a specific verse grab your attention. The last part is verses 145-176. Ask yourself, what is the writer’s attitude toward God’s Word during difficult times?
If you do not know where to start in your bible reading this week, I suggest Psalm 119. My prayer for you is that God will give you a hunger for His like never before!!
